I’m going to assume you have been watching Channel 4’s hit comedy series Derry Girls. Because if you haven’t, what the hell have you been doing with yourself? It’s one of the funniest shows on at the moment and is particularly relatable if you’re Irish.
If you have stumbled across this post and are unaware of Derry Girls, it’s set in early 90’s Northern Ireland during the turbulent years of The Troubles, and follows the lives of five school friends. Creator/Writer Lisa McGee manages to highlight the horrors of life during the troubles while showcasing the Irish sense of humour and tenacity as well!
In the most recent season 2 episode, the gang head to a 50’s style prom, and Erin (Saoirse-Monica Jackson) manages to land local stud John-Paul as her date. The hilarity of watching her dress to impress in a gown that is far too tight and hinders her movement turns sour when John-Paul stands her up, leaving her waiting to be picked up for two hours.
Just in time, James (Dylan Llewellyn) arrives at the door having been called by Erin’s mam. He decides to give up going to a Doctor Who convention to take Erin to the prom. Inevitably, fans of the show have taken to Twitter and are shipping them as a couple. But this isn’t the first time that the show has hinted at a James and Erin romance.
In episode 3 of the first season, Erin’s grandad expresses concern with the fact that James spent the night in Erin’s room while cramming for school exams, despite him (and everybody else) thinking James is gay. It seems to me like a very subtle nod to a potential future relationship between the two.
Then in the following episode, several Ukrainian students from Chernobyl arrive in Derry as part of an international exchange. Erin wrongly believes one of them is a prostitute when she finds out that she has been collecting money off people and that she has asked James to sleep with her. You could assume that Erin just has a problem with prostitution, but it seems like there was an undercurrent of her being upset that James was going to sleep with somebody else and tried to stop it.
Now in the latest episode, he arrives at the eleventh hour to take her to prom. I think “Jerin” is a sure thing and wouldn’t be surprised if there is a cliffhanger at the end of the second series finale, which sets them up for series 3!
What do you think?
