Olympic medal winning skier Gus Kenworthy has been cast in the upcoming ninth season of American Horror Story.
The shows creator Ryan Murphy revealed the news earlier today on his Instagram account. Check it out below:
Kenworthy will be playing the boyfriend of Emma Roberts’ latest character in the anthology series. Roberts has appeared in four previous seasons of the popular show in various roles.
On the one hand, I think it is always a great thing to have more LGBTQ people gaining opportunities for representation in film and TV. However, I do wonder if the part could have been given to an up-and-coming gay actor who is waiting for their big break, rather than Kenworthy, who is undoubtedly a big name and will grab headlines, but lacks experience within acting.
I’m not intending to be shady to Kenworthy in saying that. He seems like a great guy from the interviews and TV appearances I’ve seen of him, and his parents have a background in film and theatre so he undoubtedly grew up around that world. And I’ll reserve judgement fully until the series is released, because in my book, you can’t really judge a casting until you’ve seen the performance (remember how Heath Ledger was widely seen as a poor choice for the Joker in The Dark Knight, before he ended up blowing everyone away).
What do you think? Is this a good casting choice? Sound off in the comments below!
