The eagerly anticipated first trailer for the 4th instalment in the Avengers franchise has finally dropped. It feels like hardly any time has passed since Thanos snapped his fingers and wiped out half the universe back in May, but here we are again gearing up for the sequel to Infinity War. In which, we will see the remaining heroes who survived the mass genocide band together in an effort to right what Thanos did, and bring everyone who perished back. If you haven’t seen the trailer yet, check it out first below:
Right then, let’s dive right in to a few talking points here!
Who will rescue Tony?
In an ominous start to the trailer, things aren’t looking good for Tony Stark. He’s floating through space, food is scarce, oxygen is running out and he’s desperately trying to send a message to Pepper on Earth (despite not knowing if she is even alive after the snap). I’m guessing this is how the movie will open and that he won’t be stranded their for long. But who will rescue him? My bet is on Captain Marvel. I think she will be traveling through space on her own ship, pick up the message that Tony is trying to get to Pepper, and use it to locate him. In the post-rescue chit-chat, she’ll reveal that Fury sent her a message but with next to no words (as he was being disintegrated before he could tell her what happened and could only get out “motherfu..”) and Stark will fill her in on Thanos and what he did! Then they set a course for Earth, and the rest of the team. I expect that the post-credit scene of Captain Marvel will see her receive Tony’s message, directly leading into EndGame.
Are Nebula and Tony on the same ship?
At the close of Infinity War, Nebula and Tony were the last two people left standing on Titan after Spiderman, Dr. Strange, Starlord, Drax and Mantis all turned to dust. There is no clear shot of Tony and Nebula together on the Benetar, and one shot where she appears to put her hand on his shoulder could be anyones. So if they have split, what was the reasoning? I mean, surely if the universe had gone to hell in a hand basket you’d want to stick together, right? My guess is that Nebula takes off on her own to continue her mission of hunting down and killing Thanos herself. During that mission, she will eventually encounter the Collector, who must have some important information if they have kept him alive after Thanos’ assault of Nowhere in Infinity War and the Snap.
Is Shuri Dead?
It doesn’t look good for her from the picture above does it? At 1:16 in the trailer, Shuri’s face can briefly be seen floating in front of Bruce Banner as he surveys those who are presumed dead since the Snap. Shuri’s death was never seen at the end of Infinity War, and many took this, and the fact that she is now Queen of Wakanda following her brother’s death, as signs of her survival. But perhaps this is just a red herring. After all, in this particular scene Shuri’s face is shown alongside Ant-Man’s and Spiderman’s. Nobody knows that Ant-Man was trapped in the Quantum Realm as the Snap happened, and the only Avenger who knows Spiderman is dead is Tony, who is at this point still floating around space with no way of telling them. So while this might appear to list Shuri among the dead, it’s more likely this is tabulating who is missing. Why she would be missing rather than taking up her duties as Queen and the new Black Panther is anyone’s guess however. Maybe T’Challa’s death started a war in Wakanda, with other tribes fighting to take power, leading to Shuri being in hiding for her own protection?
Hawkeye becomes Ronin
Clint Barton sat out Infinity War, seemingly taking his retirement and family time seriously after the events of Civil War. But we get a glimpse of him in the trailer, and it seems that long running rumour is true: he’s become Ronin. We also get a hint as to why. Barton/Ronin appears in the trailer just as Captain America says: “we lost family” (because of the Snap). There is also a hint of just how much the death of Barton’s family has changed him when we see him standing amongst a slew of dead bodies as Black Widow looks on in horror. Over this particular shot, Cap can be heard saying “we lost a part of ourselves.” As a character, Barton has always felt a little out of his depth in the Avengers set up, so it will be interesting to see him with a new, cutthroat edge.
Captain America’s Death Foreshadowed?
The trailer ends with Black Widow and Captain America preparing to enact a plan to reverse the effects of the Snap, and defeat Thanos once and for all. When Black Widow assures him that their plan is going to work, Rogers responds by saying: “I know it is. Because I don’t know what I’m going to do if it doesn’t.” I think this is a nod to Cap laying down his life to ensure they reverse what has happened, and if you couple this with the Chris Evan’s tweet from earlier this year that appeared to hint at his exit from the franchise, the characters death is almost a certainty! It’s sure to be an emotional one!
