Hope everyone is good and enjoying the weekend. It’s a long weekend here in the States, as Labor Day falls on Monday. I literally have nothing planned, as I completely forgot it was coming up as the last few weeks have been hectic. But no plans also sounds good too!
As some of you may know if you follow on Instagram, I’ve started a new internship here in New York at TEDx. For anyone who may not know, TEDx are a part of the TED Conferences brand, who produce the world famous TED Talks. TEDx allows people from all over the world to host a TED like event in their own community about ideas that interest them.
I’m the new licensing intern there, and I just finished up my first week at the company. I could not be more excited. When I first decided to sign up for the J1 Graduate Program back in Ireland, I had dreams of working for a world renowned company. But if you had told me this time last year that I would be walking the halls of TED and getting paid to work there, I’d have laughed at you. I literally had to pinch myself this past week. They also have quite a few Irish people working or interning there too, so it’s like a little home away from home.
There is a lot to learn and get my head around in the role, but everyone has been so welcoming and helpful and I am sure that I will get the hang of things over the next few weeks.
Of course, starting with TEDx meant leaving my previous internship at the Irish Arts Center in Hell’s Kitchen, which I held since February. Leaving was bittersweet, because the Arts Center is home to some great people who really took me under their wing when I first arrived in New York. I learned a lot there, made some great friends, and will always fondly think of the place as it was essentially my first job here in the city.
Things have been hectic with the switch between places, largely because of all the red tape and procedures that come with being on a graduate visa. Anyone who has been through it will tell you how stressful it can be, and while I am usually chilled about most things, I’ve had a fair few rants getting everything sorted over the last few weeks. But, everything has worked out and I just have to keep reminding myself that anything that’s truly worth having doesn’t come easy, but positivity and perseverance make it happen.
I’ve been away from the blog the past while obviously too because getting everything sorted out was driving me crazy and I wasn’t in a very bloggy mood. But I’m back again, looking forward to writing up some new posts and making it better as I go.
So, that’s life in NYC right now in nutshell. I’ve got a great new internship, in this amazing city and am in the middle of a three day weekend, which I may make plans for, or just chill out and enjoy the time off. Life is good!
Happy Labor Day to all. I hope however you spend it, it’s fun!
